Arabica coffee plants were brought to Tanah Gayo by the Dutch. The high altitude and air temperature in this highland area are believed to be very suitable.
In Takengon, the first seedlings of Arabica coffee plants are believed to have been planted in the Paya Tumpi region, north of Lake Lut Tawar. The Dutch officially established a 125-hectare Arabica coffee plantation in 1930. The large plantation is located in two places, Belang Gele in Central Aceh and Bergendal in Bener Meriah.
